I wanted to record something with my dad, he's big into Creedence so we went for ''Have You Ever Seen The Rain''.

There are a couple of problems that I can see right off the bat; I replaced the strings on my guitar about ten minutes before I tracked the rhythm so they seem a bit synthetic to me - and the playing could be more even too. The crazy piano-solo will probably be replaced with guitar of some sort too.

And the vocals are pretty karaoke! :D But it's been fun so far.

The bass seems a bit buried in the mix, might be that the snare is kind of loud compared to the kickdrum. I usually try to keep the kick drum and the bass guitar close to the same volume when I do a mix. The organ part is cool with that leslie effect but its a bit loud when it pops in there. Are you adding more guitars as you go? You could pan the guitar and organ to left or right and add you're Martin somewhere in between.
By the way who is doing what in the song between your dad and you?

Vocals do have the karaoke thing going on :D

Backing sounds good to me. I like the piano towards the end. Bass is easy to hear which is good, but I think you could bring the other instruments up and have the bass still be clear (might need to use some EQ).

Hey guys. Yeah Tony I'm not sure where I want the bass...it's pretty rounded right now, I actually capoed it believe it or not to transpose the bass to F...I guess I was feeling lazy. I could take it down a notch and EQ some high end into it.

The organ I can fix easily, although how will the rotory effect sound if I pan it quite hard? There may be an electric guitar going in there, might arpeggiate some of the chords.

Danny he can hit the notes, it's just a classic example of someone getting shy when they're in front of a mic! He does need to rock out a bit.

What do you guys think of the acoustic?

And Tony I did the music, my dad sang.

Hey TelePaul,

I love this Creedence Tune. I also like the freshness of new strings, especially on acoustics. Definitely bring the acoustic guitar up in the mix and if you add an electric guitar to arppegiate the chords I think this will give it more of the Creedence signature that their songs have.
The vocals are a little pitchy as you know so get Dad to get his act together!! :p

Thanx for sharing TelePaul! :)

Okay have messed with the mix a bit but I'm gonna re-track the guitars and vocals hopefully tonight.

For what it is, doesn't sound too bad. Get your Dad to put more Ooomph into the vocals...:D

Seriously, if he can put a bit more into it, it will sound better....less monotone. He did better in teh chorus, so if he could do a bit more of that in the verse portion.

Sounds fun though....

Nothing beats music in a family, I say. Ac gtr sounds good. Great organ part. What I'd do: I'd bring out the gtr much more and build the backing arrangement around it. Maybe add more ac gtr parts. I'd leave out the artificial drums. I'd autotune the vocal a touch, not to perfect it but to get the most important spots more in tune, or I'd retrack them since your dad was, as you describe, not singing his best. Have him sing it when he thinks the mic's not on.:D

A gentle reading - quite charming.
Deserves a bit more work.

I've been meaning to get a listen to this. I finally have time to sit down and listen.

Sounds pretty nice overall. Few things I'd personally change:

1) the drums don't work for me. They sound fake and robotic and I think the the kick is too clicky for this song.

2) The acoustic sounds great. I think it should carry the song more. More acoustic, and slightly less organ when it kicks in. I'd keep the organ subtle and use several acoustic tracks.

3) The bass sounds good, but maybe a little loud. I think it should be more subtle and hold up the bottom end from underneath.

4) Have pops belt it out more.

These are just my opinions. Overall it's very good. :)

I'm looking forward to hearing it progress.

Trying to sound like J C Foggerty is tough. You literally have to sing/scream his tunes, no wonder he was so popular. :D

This version is like a "light" or "diet" version. It's not as rocky or punchy but it does sound okay. God knows I could never sound like Creedence....;)

I like the organ a lot, really nice. The drums and bass are good too - perfectly matched. I think if you could bring the guitars up a bit, it would round things off a bit. The vocals are okay but to really make them shine the singer needs to up the key a step and try and belt it out. Vocals take several takes sometimes and comping....

I think you did the song a great deal of justice... I can see changes to make it more like Creedence but this version is pretty good overall...

Ah Greg L and your hatred of my drum loops! Albeit real drum loops XLR!

Yeah you guys make alot of sense about focusing a song around the acoustic. It might be cool to capo somewhere and transpose. I'm putting this one on the back burner for a bit, I'll come up with something more worthwhile and maybe re-visit it down the line.

Hold up, I didn't say I hated the drums, I just think they're a little too punchy for this song.:o
