Some advice?

I want to start recording, but I'm not sure what to get. I don't want to record a band, but I'll be playing the intsruments myself, guitar, bass, a drummachine, piano and vocals. I think 8 tracks will be enough. A digital multitracker would be an option, but they all have their limitations. I also have a good computer, which I could use, but I just want to use it as a recording and storing medium and not for mixing and editing. Is it possible to record through a mixing board to your computer and send the signal back to the mixer for blayback? Any thoughts and advice would be welcome.

If you have a computer, will you be recording via that? How much is your budget? Before we can recommend anything, let us know your budget so we can suggest some hardware/software to you :)

Yes, you can set up a mixer to work with your pc and work in that way. You would however, get rid of the standard fitted soundcard and purchase another.

My budget is that of a beginner, just for starting I think about 900 Euro. I won't be buying any effect processors, microphones, compressors just yet. Just want a good beginning and build on from there.
As for the computer, I want to use it as little as possible and do the recording and mixing on a mixer. I saw the Esi Esp1010 and Audiotrak Maya 1010, which both have 8 analog in and outputs, are they what I'm looking for?

Well those are PCI Cards with break out boxes, which are made for computers. If you dont want to use your computer, why dont you look at something like this:

This is basically everything you need to record all in one. Portable too if your wanting to record some live gigs. It is quite an advanced little machine, and you can get cheaper ones than that if you werent wanting to spend all your euro.

as for recording with a mixer and a computer. It will really depend on how many inputs and outputs your soundcard has. With something like the m-audio delta 10/10, you have 10 inputs and ten outputs. This way, you can route 10 channels of your mixer to the inputs of the soundcard, via direct out or insert points, and use the 10 outputs to go back to another 10 channels of you mixer.

So what kind of mixer would I need for 8 track recording?

for an 8 track recorder? Most 8 tracks already have built in mixers. Like this one:

I think your getting a little confused with the hardware. An 8 track recorder is basically a small studio in a box, has everything (except mics) to record. even has built in editing software assuming its quite a new 8 track that is. I think this is what your talking about..

I know what you mean, but I'm talking about a mixer to use in combination with a soundcard (with breakout box).

Ok, so if you bought a soundcard with a breakout box, and routed it all via a mixer, what would you be recording your music to? You need some sort of HD to record onto, by using just a mixer and a soundcard, you cant record.
