Hi there, I wonder if I can have some advice?

I am putting together an album for my mother of me singing to backing tracks. I am having singing lessons and ready to start recording. The initial idea was to hire a recording studio but quite honestly I cant afford that.

However, I do have some equipement left over from when I had a band and wonder if I can use this and what I would need to add, if anything to get a half sensible recerding.

Now, this is my Mum we are talking about and quite honestly I could use an old cassette recorder and record the track the old fantioned way and she would be delighted. However, for my own sake I want to do as good a job as I can.

I have the following.

A 12 channel power amp/mixing desk.
Mic and leads (the mike is a shure PE 588).
A lap top
Some mixing software (not sure what).
A bringer UFO202 sound card thingy.
A brother who is quite good with cumputers and things....and a bit clever in general.
MP3 Backing tracks
My voice
Leads to connect from Amp to lap top.
A room where I work that is about 2.5m x 2.5m

Do I have enough stuff here to do some half sensible recordings and has anyone got any advice about do's and dont's etc

Many thanks in antispation!

Buy her a Julio Iglesias CD and scratch his name out... it's the only way.

You probably need a real audio interface and at least some headphones to mix with if this isn't a serious pursuit. Your Behringer device is for line level audio signals from a record player or cassette, as far as I can work out.

If all you want to do is record vocals over backing tracks I would suggest a simple interface with built in preamps (and 48 volt phantom power Should you decide to get a condensor microphone)
Armastice is right the behringer thing is not going to cut it.
Or get a dare i say it, usb condensor mic
It all depends on your budget and how deep you want to go.etc
Lots of people start out with something like the m audio fast track interface.
theres plenty of folks round here willing to help so i'm sure you will soon find something to suit your needs and budget.
you will have to consider monitors too if you want to mix it and some room treatment just my thoughts.
I hope this helps

This is one of the few times I'm likely to say this, but honestly, buy a decent usb condenser mic.

One purchase, one item. Done.

I do agree with the advice about room treatment and monitors etc generally speaking, but I know I could pull this job off with premade backing tracks, a usb mic and a pair of headphones.

Since the backing track is probably already mixed to a high standard, you don't have to worry about it, and since vox go down the middle, you don't have to worry about stereo image, so headphones (or computer speakers) should be fine for you.

If you think you might pursue audio recording further then ignore my advice, but if it's just some vocal to backing projects, then go for it! :)

They only really big thing to worry about is tracking levels. Don't let your voice get anywhere near 0 on your software meters, and you'll be fine.
