Are they really that good? Worth over 3 grand? Opinions please.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Well a Soldano SLO will not sound like an 800. I personally think it would compliment the 800 nicely, but that is really something you have test yourself. It is a more "modern" amp. Soldano, ENGL, Egnater, Bogner, VHT, etc will all give you a more modern tone. None are "bad".mr. torture said:The reason why I asked about the Soldano is because I want to get something to complement my JCM 800. When recording, I would like to use a different rig than the same Marshall for Left & Right, wanna mix up the tone a bit.
Problem I have in a small home studio, is no matter what I do I get the same tone from the Marshall. I cant change the room, but I can add another head into the mix.
I do 80's style metal, but am looking for a more modern sound. Examples would be Rob Halford's solo stuff, Dickenson's solo stuff...Roy-Z style. I like the wall of sound overdrive they achieved.
I love my Marshall and would buy another, only I am afraid I will get the same sound. So, I guess I am looking for an alternative amplifier. This is why I started looking at the Soldano's, Boogie, Engl, Bogner, Randall...What would you suggest?
Thanks again!

Hard2Hear said:Ive owned both a Reverb-O-Sonic and an SLO100. Frankly, I found them both to be quite harsh and sterile. Build quality was fine, but it should be for a printed circuit board. My Divided By 13 and old AC30 sound much better for mostly anything except for metal.
Hard2Hear said:No, but I also prefer my Marshall TSL100 over the Soldanos I had. When I A/B'd, the Marshall just creamed the SLO100. The SLO had no guts.

If you've got $3000 to drop on an amp, I'd look into some of the tweed or Vox clones first. They will give you more contrast on your tracks (which is a good thing), and they will give you a wider range of options.

I'm looking for a screaming tone, not "Beatles". ;-)

And, for what it's worth, on a recent trip down to Louisiana for Mardi Gras, I saw this band playing in one of the clubs on the strip. They were getting some nasty (in a gooood way) tones. Their rigs? One guy was using a light ash Tele through a Bad Cat 1 x 12, the other guy was using a PRS through a Fender Super Reverb... They both had a few distortion/overdrive pedals in their setup, but the only one that both of them consistently used was a tube screamer.Light said:Well, an AC30 does a LOT more than just a Beatles sound. It's a very versatile amp.
The real key here is you said you wanted a contrast. If you've got your Marshal doing the bulk of the heavy lifting, than something different (like an AC30 or an old tweed Deluxe type amp) is going to fill in some areas which your Marshal simply can't do, and which any other high gain amp is going to have a hard time with as well. You don't even necessarily have to LIKE the second sound (though it would be nice if you did), all you have to do is like how they sound TOGETHER.
But hey, I don't insist, I'm just making a suggestion.
