Hey, I want to add a good parametric EQ to my rig, but I just don't have the money to get a nice hardware one right now. I would like to have 5 or more bands with adjustable Q that sounds good. Any suggestions? Budget? About $500.

Since you don't specify your platform or OS, you'll need to do your own searching here. Two that I use are the Kjaerhus Classic EQ and the Nyquist EQ - they're both free and IMHO you'd be foolish not to try them first before spending money on a commercial EQ.

Elemental Audio has a couple good EQ's for not a lot of money. They offer a package deal for their EQuim, the normal parametric eq and FIRuim the linear phase mastering EQ, (more of a graphical eq). EQuim has unlimited bands. FIRuim divides the audio spectrum into about 50 points and has a slider at each point.

You'll have to check if these work on your PC, but a couple plugin eq's I like are the PSP MasterQ and the Elemental Audio Equim.

Thanks for all the replies. As I was messing around with the 4-band software parametric EQ in Tracktion tonight, I thought of a feature that I would like. Do any parametric EQ's have an advance "enable/disable" feature where you can turn on and off a band individually without having to drag the curve back to 0 manually? Let's say I have made 2 cuts, and I want to see how an additional boost somewhere in the spectrum sounds with and without the 2 cuts.

Most of the parametric eq plugins I've seen have that feature.

Definitely check the Sonalksis SV-517. One of the warmest and analog like EQ plugs I have heard.

IMO maby the best is Hydratone from TriTone Digital. Plainly awesome EQ for being a plugin...

Just for the record, you *can* get a good hardware parametric for $500. I recently bought an Orban model 642b for $500 and I really like it. I also picked up a Klark-Teknik DN410 for about $500 and that's a nice eq too. You may be able to find a Urei 546 for around $500 or so as well. These are all used of course.

But for $500 you can get a lot of different eq plugins. Probably buy a whole suite of them, like the PSP MasterQ, Sonalksis, and the Elemental Audio for around $500.

I'm glad I have my PSP MasterQ, but I do tend to use the hardware stuff more.
