After an attempt at getting my father's old Micro MOOG to play properly (age/dust has gotten to it :( ) I figure the next best thing would be a software synth, seeing as how I am pretty poor. After a good look at hitsquad.com, I quickly became overwhelmed at the sheer number of different soft synths out there. I'd like it to be a VST instrument so I can use it with n-Track.

Since I'm on a college student budget, I can't really afford multi hundred dollar software, so something free or relatively cheap would be ideal. It doesn't have to be anything incredibly ellaborate, I'm no pro, I just want something to fool around with and get some cool sounds with.

Does anyone have anything to recommend?

were you thinking more of something that plays samples or a full on synthesizer? for synths, triangle II was pretty cool (because it was free). also edirol made some decent stuff.

if you have any cash at all, get an academic copy of reason 3.0. it is absolutely amazing. best synth and sampler i have used.

I really want Reason, but even for the academic price of $200 I still can't afford it :(

I'll check out Triangle II, and Edirol. I am looking for a synth, NOT a sampler (actually, maybe a sampler would be a cool thing to toy around with as well.....)

Thanks for the input!
