I've tried mastering my projets, they sound good but whenever I put a commercial CD after my project,I notice a difference in the depth and clarity of the whole mix.I do my mastering in a software and plugins related atmosphere.
adobe Audition,Sonar 3,wavelab,Vintage warmer,Soundforge 7 and Acid.Anybody got advice on high I could achieve that soft silky sound that the pros have in their end products?

I'll give you a hint: Those recordings sound that good before they are ever even see a mastering studio. The mastering is just the final touch. If your stuff lacks the depth and clarity you desire, then start with omproving your instruments, room, mics, recording techniques, preamps, convertors, mixing skills, etc.

Exactly right!

Just as a great mix starts with great recording, a great master starts with a great mix. You are not going to get the same results from your current setup as a studio with an SSL or Neve, a 2" tape machine, and mics that cost over $1K.

A couple of tips that may get you closer though:

1. When recording try to get the signal path as clean as possible. Use outboard mics pres direct to "tape" instead of going through all the nasty IC circuits on a cheap board.

2. For a "silkier" sound you probably want to go to tape at some point rather than a completely digital chain. Try getting a well-aligned tape machine that runs at least 15 ips and running tracks through it with the tape machine inserted in the track. If using Pro Tools you may also want to give the Crane Song Phoenix plugins a try.

3. Try a good tube compressor. Another option (though more expensive) is the Crane Song HEDD unit which emulates tube gear.
