Many of you are probably aware of the fact that having your music featured in a film or tv show can give your/your band's music career a huge boost. You'll receive great exposure and a much greater chance to be noticed by the labels.

I used to wonder why movies use soundtracks of unknown bands as oppose to well-known ones. Then, what usually happens, is that the soundtrack would launch the band's career into this highly competitive industry (e.g. Evanescence). After doing some reading on this subject, I found out that the reason that most movie production house would rather not license the music of a well-known artist is because of the complications involved in obtaining the license (going through the publishing company AND the record company) as well as the high fee that these artists charge.

What that means for us is that the movie production companies are always searching for QUALITY music to be used in their movies. (same goes for TV) What we need to find out is who is responsible for selecting the music for the particular film/TV and how we can submit our music to them. I found a book called the "Music Licensing Guide" that explains this whole process of getting your music licensed into film. The author also includes info on who to send your music to. I've placed songs in movies (unfortunately they've been direct to video rather that a big budget theatrical release). I've only gotten background scene placement (no opening or closing credits) which means maybe 20 seconds of the song is actually heard. It has not made my carreer, but I do get a BMI check in the mail every quarter. Maybe someday, I'll get lucky and get a song in a blockbuster (we must continue to dream, right???)

Certain publishers specialize in placement in films. The key is finding those publishers and more importantly, having the goods. I do find that they want mastered quality material that can be placed as is.

More often than not if I have the right tune, the thing that gets it turned down is the final quality - in particular the volcals (vocals sell songs). I find I commit most of my budget to paying the best singers I can get.
 
Aww man

Getting my music into a movie soundtrack or even played for just 20 secs is just what im looking for. Ive been producing so long without having artist I used to have a tune in my head that would some how compliment llyrics...iono But what im tryna say sometimes I over due it because im used to hearing it by myself. SOmetimes making it difficult to lay vocals on it because the beat has so much. Most of my music in my opinion i can hear in movies rather them Albums.
I produce hiphop but my compositions seem to be more cinematical.

This is NOT a book, its apparently a 25 dollar pdf file. :rolleyes:

The author has a background that is almost exclusively for canadian TV.

Get into doing music for TV ads, that's where the real money is.

Although not as 'worthy' as a theatrical feature, TV ads can provide good regular work if you work it right.
