First post! Great forum!

I am soon to spend about 10k on a small studio. It will be mainly for personal use [instrumental guitar, vai, satriani genre etc] but if I can get it sounding decent I may rent it out too, and expand it.

I just moved to the US from Australia 15 months ago, and had to leave ALL my gear there, so I have zilch zero zip, well I do have a decent PC, but that's all.

I just want to get a few idea's to start my search. So if you had 10k, what software, hardware, card, preamp, mics etc etc would YOU buy?

get me a L22 (if multiple source tracking isn't required only 2 ins and outs)(650)

great river mp 2nv(2200) and the great river eq NV(3000)

distressor(3000)

mic= SM7 and Cad M9(600-700 for both if you look)

and whats left get a decent pair of monitors and amp or active monitors and an attenuator A-design makes a real good one for 99 bucks

monitors-active Yorkville Ysm1's (400)

a little over 10,000 but you will have a stereo channel strip that is straight MURDER!!!

I'd devote about $1000 of that to sheetrock, studs, and other room building/altering things.
I've noticed that acoustics is one of the most over looked aspects of building a studio.
No, lining your rooms with "auralex" won't automatically them better.

Thanks for the replies :D it seems I have A LOT of research.
How about software? This is where I have a little bias, I've used Cubase for years...I'd really like to get into the pro tools area, is it possible on this budget?

Doink. I am renting so I can't do any construction work, I wish I could. When we buy a house that will be happening without a doubt.
