so I'm looking to get a mixer for my microphone and i already have an audio intetercae but I'm looking at this http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-XENYX-1202-12-Input-Mixer/dp/B000J5Y282/ref=zg_bs_11974861_6 and i see that i can put my xlr in, but wheres the output? how could i connect this to mu interface? help thanks. and also if anyone could explain to me what i need to use compression on my vocals, I'm pretty sure its software but i think mixers are involved too. thanks

What interface? What makes you think you need a mixer? I'm confused.

I think you should spend some time reading the 'Stickies' here, and researching on the web. No offense meant, you just need to understand what it is you are asking here. We are always willing to help. :)

You don't need a mixer if you have an interface. Read and your questions will be more answerable.

I'd worry about compression once you have the basic concepts down.

To repeat - do a lot of reading before you buy anything more.

Okay. As others have said, there is no automatic need for an interface and (unless your interface is really bad) a cheap mixer like that Behringer might do more harm than good to your quality without adding much functionality.

Some boring old git wrote THIS FAQ discussing all the pros and cons of using a mixer in a home studio.

To answer your very specific question, the outputs of the mixer are towards the back above the master section. You'd have a choice of L and R balanced outputs on TRS jacks or unbalanced on RCA/Phono connectors.

As for compression, on a proper mixer there'd be an insert socket near each channel input and, with the right cables, you could put the compressor there. However, the Behringer you linked to doesn't have this facility. However, frankly, my advice would be to NOT compress when tracking and, instead, to add any compression "in the box" while mixing.

But, I'll agree with the others and strongly recommend you read some FAQs before spending any money.

If four people give you exactly the same advice, there is a possibility that you could ignore it and go the other way.
But not five. :D
Read up on some basics. It really won't take long at all.
Knowledge is the key that unlocks this particular door.

You are a hobo that plays the oboe and you can afford what I am guessing is a Mark of the Unicorn interface ? What model is it ?

What does the "mu" stand for ? Maybe its an EMU ?

Golly gee whiz am I overtired, the "mu" is "my".

lol @ me.
