so who's our best and brightest around gere these days??? i needd to know about some stuff...

1 servers??? how do they differ from PCs??? will they run xp??? will server2003 or whatever current run xp compatable progs???

2 how hard is it to sync up (run concurrently) mutiple machines??? is a dual dual better than a single quad???

thnx in advance...

A server is just a PC running server software. Often times, they will have more advanced hardware (storage controllers etc)

MS server packages are the same kernal as the desktop versions, they can all run the same software. The only real difference is the MS software that is running and the number of physical processor sockets supported. That being said, a server install will have a TON windows server components required for it's server duties and will tax your system quite a bit more. You can turn these off however to get back to a more xp like load (and ppl do this for DAWs)

Syncing up different machines is done a number of different ways. You can do it via something like steinberg's system link, midi over lan, and others

thnx... that's kinda what i thought... the reason i ask is i'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a long term project of mine and have been advised to consider copping a couple of refurbed servers off of ebay.. looks like i could get say 2-3 dual dual core for@$1k... and dedicate one to audio.. one to vsti's... and the third for mass storage and office crap... then keep this old p4 for interwebs...

used machines for a grand each are kinda high unless you get the server license with it which may or may not be even possible. What are the specifics of each box?

no... that was total of$1k... these are stripped way down ... no os... some though for instance have 3x 15k scsi that with an rme card could even be road worthy for vsti's or so it would seem... one project is a classic rock bar band... the bass player has a it co he runs outta his house but curiously enough he never really let them merge...

gotcha. I cant really say if it is worth the work or not. You can get a pretty banging PC for a grand these days and those fast SCSI drives are LOUD as hell. But if its already bought, then you might as well give it a whirl. Here is another package you should check out..
