Hi guys,

I am thinking of setting up a little home studio area over the summer. This is not meant to be a full on a studio with sound proofing etc - I want to get to grips with using the software, get a real feel for mixing, and just get some general experience in before I plan on taking this hobby further. Basically I have a proposed setup.

The whole setup will be in my living room, a rectangular room, which is really quite long. I thought this might give the room quite a nice reverb... thoughts?

What do I plan on buying?

- New computer. I need one of these anyway. Planning on getting one with a pretty big HD obviously, lots of RAM, and just general good specs.

- Sound card and mixer. I thought the Firepod looked like a good little piece of kit. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

- POD 2.0. For some guitar amp modelling. Otherwise we will be using a Marshall amp - possibly miced up; more likely lined in.

- Mic. Condenser I presume. A Shure one perhaps? I'll have to dig around the mic forum.

- Monitor Speaks. Might get some second hand ones off Ebay. Bose 101's?

- Headphones. Want some good headphones cos I am likely to mixing at night. Behringer or Seinheisers?

And I think thats it.

Any reccommendations or changes you guys think I should do?

Thanks so much in advance,

Sammy.

- focus on those computer metrics plus hd spindel speed (atleast 7200rpm)

- I have the firepod... no need for soundcard or mixer; very versatile, make sure you have firewire input on your computer. I like mine alot

- I would say don't waste your money on the POD just yet... Experiment with what you have so far

- Get a condenser (i'll leave that to your choosing) but a Shure SM57 is great for most applications. You'll want atleast three mics for recording drums, 1 kick (sm57?), one snare (sm57!) and a room mic (condenser). 3 mics will treat you fine

- Can't do much for you on the monitor front, sorry

- Avoid mixing with headphones!! Use them for tracking and stuff. I bought $20 pair and they serve their purpose well enough.

Hope that helps at all

bose 101s are not monitors. They just make stuff sound good, not true. Look at musiciansfriend.com for some you like, then find them on ebay. I recommed wharfedale 8.2a.
