I'm looking at a Alesis MULTIMIX 12 FXD. It says it has a SPDIF output. So this means I can buy a SPDIF input card for my computer and I'm all set to record? Also how good do you think the a/d converter is on an alesis, I realize this is an entry level board. It says it has "<0.01%" distortion, thats fairly high isn't it?

Yes, it looks like it will work. As long as you understand that S/PDIF is a two channel stereo format. In other words, all of your mixer inputs must be mixed down to at least two channels before being sent out the S/PDIF output. If you record more than two instruments simultaneously, they will not be kept entirely separate. Also some S/PDIF equipment comes using an RCA type plug (on coax cable) and some using a TOSlink fiber optic cable. As long as your sound card uses RCA/coax and the sample rate can be set to 44.1 then you should be good.

As far as sound quality, Alesis traditionally uses good quality converters but, I am not sure about their budget line of equipment. The old “You get what you pay for” rule may apply here.

Good Luck

BTW .01% distortion is not bad at all, assuming this is a THD value.
