Anyway, if i purchased this http://www.guitarcenter.com/M-Audio-Pro-Tools-Recording-Studio-H09959-i1549430.gc just for that crappy version of pro tools would it be worth it? Maybe crappy is the wrong word, but I'm just looking for something cheap, so i could mess around with Pro tools

If you want to get your "feet wet" in the world of pro-tools, this is a capable unit.

assuming you are familiar with other recording programs protools isnt much different. If you are not then learn all the others and protools will be a piece of cake

If your goal is to record from pro studio to pro studio, or to work in one...most use Pro Tools, so it might benefit you to learn the basics of PT.
If it's just for your own studio use...there are many other apps as good (some will say even better ), so find the one that works for you. They all have a different feel and functionality.

Also...the Pro Tools you get with a lot of less expensive packages ain't quite the same Pro Tools rig you will find in the high-end pro studios.

Note- that's the older version of the Fast Track. Look Ma, no phantom power (therefore, no condenser mics, and only one channel. Consider upgrading to this:

2 channels w/ phantom power, so at least you can do stereo recording with condenser mics. Huge advantage.-Richie

Forget pro tools. Go with reaper. Free to use and to buy it outright is less then the fast track.

Audio Intrefaces are a dime a dozen. don't purchase that just for the sake of having pro tools.

If you see yourself working with others who are insistent on ProTools AND you are comfortable with the workflow and tools in ProTools AND resign yourself to being locked into Digidesign-approved hardware (they use it as a copy protection dongle), then go ahead.

Reaper is cheaper and will work with any ASIO interface.

It's all in what YOU are comfortable with, as they all do the same basic functions.
