I had a Midi cable sent to me, it's one that has a USB connector, I have a digital piano which has these Midi ports....so my question is can I use it for any good? I was thinking of recording software....

I'm totally new to Midi and recording in general

Thanks!

You will just be able to record the midi data (notes etc). If you want to record audio you would need an audio interface

altitude909 has it. MIDI can only transfer commands, not actual audio. The commands can be interpreted by the receiving device in many ways, for example triggering a software instrument such as a piano. If you plug your keyboard in with the MIDI to USB cable you should be able to fairly easily mess around with some instruments in your DAW. Have fun!
