Slowing becoming un-noob.
Should I just sell my 2x12 and purchase a 1x12? or should i build my own cabinet for the 1x12 and take the speaker out of the 2x12?

Or...

Anyone wanna trade? plus give me a couple bucks to make it fair? Or something...

I'm sort of in the same boat. If you have any woodworking skills, I'd at least try to make a 1x12 cab - I bet it's easy to find plans on the web. I don't have any woodworking skills :(

Cabinets are funny - they're so bulky that shipping is expensive, so that stifles a cottage industry that would otherwise be there, I bet. I talked to a local speaker repair specialist about why it was so hard to find custom or used cabinets around, and he said there was just no money in building/selling them yourself (probably because of the shipping issue).

[I'm veering off topic... aaaah....] But who doesn't have a friend or two with a wood shop? I did, until I moved 1000 miles away from where I went to high school. Maybe there's a WWW opportunity -- cabinet-making-friends network -- someone in Sydney needs one but doesn't know anybody, and same with someone in Portland, but the Sydney person knows someone in Atlanta, and the Portland person knows someone in Sydney, and... anyway, I'll take that one offline :D:cool:

I say why not try to make one yourself? I've made a few. First a 112 for a friend to fit his epiphone valve junior head or what ever they are called. Second was a 212 cab with a space in the top to put my head in so I could just bring that to shows instead of my 412 cab and head. Third was a ISO cab that holds 112 speaker and 2 mics for recording which wieghs about 300lb. None of them turned out pefect, because I'm impatiant and just want them done. But they all sounded good, and I got better as I went.

Can't speak for E, but for me it's a matter of form factor / luggability.

yeah, i can see that. can't argue here.

Or, how about 'The size that fits the room, or the gig at hand sounds best.'

this may or may not be right. 2 speakers - not necessarily louder, but sounds better. i don't see why a 2x would be inappropriate at a venue. but i don't mean this in an arrogant way - i'd be interested to hear why.

what sort of cab do you propose trading for, and what do you have now?

Sorry, not being help to the OP, just joining in the fun..
I have little closed back Peavey Classic 1-12 that is really sweet. It fits' really well. It's very portable, and the speaker smoothes out at reasonable volume. Although, I'd love to find a second one for the occasional larger, loud stages. ;)

The 1 vs 2 speaker issue is certainly a matter of personal taste. My personal opinion is that they sound about the same.

A friend of mine just bought a TopHat head (EXTREMELY NICE AMP ALERT) with a matching 112 cab. He auditioned the 212 cab with it cause that's what the salesman told him sounded better. But his personal ear got the best of him and he ended up with the single 12.

I've got both single and double cabs - and I can't honestly say one is better than the other. But the 112 is MUCH lighter. So guess which one gets used more .

As far as making a cab, if you have access to a table saw, it's very easy to build a very functional cab of any size. I'm trying to find some pics of ones I've built.

There's plenty of advice on line on how to do the joints, etc.

Yep. I don't have room to lug around a heavy 2x12 cab. Just more annoyance than it's worth.

2x12 Avatar cab. Vintage 30's.
I would prefer a 1x12 with a V30. Or another nice speaker.

I'm thinking more and more of making my own cabinet. But yeah.
