Between being and nothing
I got some time out to record a couple of tunes with a friend of mine in Santa Cruz.

He's still tweaking the mix, but gave me a CD of our work to share.

Check 'em both out on the top of my music page here:

The emails I've gotten from him stated that the feed back he's gotten have run along the lines of "mindboggingly great" and "people who don't call me back when I have new music are getting back to me right away on these."

Anyway...what really matters is...what do YOU think?

I listened to the first 3 so far.

Dial 911…A good example of your range of styles. It sounded better when I cut a lot of the lows. You need a better mic. Reminds me of my experience with my aunt. Good and different.

Self Empower…Yet another good example of your range of styles. I like that guit sound at 1:48.

Wilder…Very good for a palm pilot experiment. Very good example of your arranging and melodic skills. I like that synth guit at 2:04.

I’ll listen to the rest when I have time. You need a better mic. One that suits your voice, and you have wonderful eyes.

Self Empowerment 101 is definetly some funky shit helen.:D

p.s. I agree with monty about you needing a mic that gives your voice some presence. It's not being totally captured at the moment.

I don't think it is mindboggingly great, but it is good.. The recording and mix levels are off the chain though.. Nice voice, nice song, bad vocal sound.. (911)

self empowerment was cool.. I liked it better, but the vocal sound is not good again.. try a pop screen and compression.. the distorted electric guitar part doesn't fit at all imhop..

good stuff overall though.. :D

Thanks guys!

Rick doesn't use a pop filter, and I use a Shure 57 when I record at his place. I'd rather use a nice condenser, but I guess I gotta remember to bring mine whenever I visit him and his family.

Hopefully, he'll do some wizardry with the mixes when he's done...

on 911...the synth stuff was ok...but the vocal sound with all the mic pops, was very low quality. very muddled and the reverb on it was just as bad. The song needed some better direction too. kinda sounded like a improv. nice and original, however.

self impowerment... had the same recording problems. when you started singing "shut up...he said...etc" I clicked it off. sorry, but I didn't like it at all. Very home brew sounding and the vocals didn't do it for me. The reverb on the vocals that you are using...sounds really cheap too....like a cheapie gtr amp reverb.
this one wasn't as original as the first one.... typical 70's funk stuff and improv vocals on top.

Thanks for your comments.

I think when he remixes this, he's going to use a different reverb, as well as some compression and other stuff. We'll see...

As for 911...yep. I had a poem, and I had to improve it to his tracking bed. I'm a little torn about how it turned out, myself, but, well...

I listened to the first two because I'm tired. Range has been mentioned here already but I gotta echo that. You're stuff is very artistic, bordering on literary. Like Laurie Anderson. not particular to any era or type of person. I like it.

Cool stuff:

911: I like this, your voice seems a bit hot though. Beautiful voice by the way. Have you ever heard of the Moon and the Melodies? This reminds me of that.

Self Empowered 101: this is funkaaaayyy! And such a change, your voice is so powerful here, still a little hot or something. Maybe it's that mic thing that Monty was talking about. very cool

Couldn't listen to Wilder :(

Daydream: I like how this has a very old feel with a modern twist. That's original. And now your voice is just sweet.

I'll try to get to more later. I enjoyed these and I'm sure my wife will too (I'll turn her on to them in the morning). Great job! :D
