all up in yo grill!
i keep seeing firewire this and that and I'm wondering am i sending myself the way of the aardvark Q10 by not looking into getting one of them things? how much better is getting one of those than sticking with pci card units?

Hey, if the Q10 works for ya, then it works. Most firewire cards are PCI cards anyway. The Q10's PCI card is custom. Firewire won't make anything sound better. What matters to you the Q10 are the preamps and A/D converters. Worthwhile upgrades of that will probably cost a lot of money.

PCI, in its various incarnations, will almost assuredly always be faster than Firewire, so no, Firewire does not mark the end of PCI. Whether or not you should get a Firewire-based audio solution seems to depend entirely on whether or not it meets your needs.

Firewire will not kill PCI. PCI-X is soon to start being manufactured alot more which will slowly start to kill PCI like USB2 is slowly killing USB1. Nothing to worry about, PCI still beats Firewire anyway so its all good :)

Agreed with everyone else - Firewire I think is more of a convenience thing; it isn't any faster than PCI, and in many cases is slower.

Thats said, I have an RME Fireface, and couldn't be happier.

Correction: PCIe... PCI-X is reserved for server market only and is already out.
PCI Express is the consumer level interface that is actually markedly better than PCI-X.

PCI-X is or server market only? How come my G5 has PCI-X slots? Or have i misread it..?

tis PCIe maybe you read PCI eXpress?

meh either way we get the point. the new generation of pci cards have a heap load of available bandwidth.

I want a serial port soundcard.... jjust like my old dot matrix printer...

Apple chose to use PCI-X as it's [somewhat] backwards compatible with vanilla PCI. I would say it's a wasted effort as PCI Express is much faster and seems to be gaining a shitload of steam. I can't recall ever seeing a PCI-X device, but PCI Express video cards are available in droves.

Back to the original question hey guys. Firewire will not mare the end of PCI but i find that my PCI soundcard picks up alot of internal noise from within the computer and with firewire it doesnt and that can i feel is a great advantage.

Such narrowmindedness! You forget yourself! And you forget Firewire 800.....and Firewire 1600! Sure PCI beats Firewire 400. It BARELY beats Firewire 800. I don't know the specs of PCI-Express, but it better be damn fast to keep up with Firewire 1600. It's not over yet....

PCI-Express, in its current revision, is rated up to 16GB/sec. The gap isn't narrowing, it's getting bigger.

To be honest with you i was answering the question which started this thread. There is no need to state all of the above that you said, i was simply stating that PCI is being upgraded to match the other types.

And like Elevate said, PCI-Express is damn fast, nothing will catch it at the moment.

Well, that's poor design (inadequate shielding), not an attribute of PCI cards in general.
