Snare: Vented, or Not?

i have a vented snare and like it quite a bit but I would still love a great unvented snare as well.

I play in a ska/punk band so the vents work well but every now and then I'd love to have a nice deep sound and you just can't get that with giant vents

I don't like the huge holes, they take the feeling of depth away. Plus they sound terrible for recording, no body, all attack. Only my opinion of the five I've ever worked with.

vented snares are one of the worst "inventions" in drumming history, even worse than the pedal-detunable Yamaha floor tom.

Thanks a lot OCDP for setting back drum tuning and sounds a good 50 years. As long as it's marketable, the sheep with money will buy it, right?

Give me a well-tuned Supra or Dunnett any day of the week over one of those worthless overpriced pieces of toneless junk.

At one time, platform shoes with goldfish in them were all the rage, too...

Seriously, I think I'd rather mic up a drum-corps style snare that sounds like playing a slab of formica than one of those vented snares. They're loud. Big deal. Recording "loud" is not the same as recording "good".

i agree, they sound very puny, i've played a few at a couple local shows. no depth, plus they gotta be cranked to sound half way decent.

I had to vote for unvented (even though there's NO SUCH THING as an unvented snare). I would prefer 3 small holes with grommets just to allow the snare to breath better without taking away the sound of the wood. Vented snares are useless devices that are meant to sell drums, not improve them.
