I'm sick and tired of my fucking snare drum. Its a dumbass pice of shit that sounds liek shit, no matter how I tune it. So I'm gonna start buying my new drum set tomorrow. I have $160 saved, enough for a new snare. I want the SOnor Force 3005. Problem is, I don't know whether I should get the steel snare or the maple snare. Do you know what the difference is? I play rock (think Nirvana, Primus, Tool, A Perfect Circle, System of a Down, and Rancid). Which should I pick, the steel or the maple?

REQUIREMENTS:
LOUD
WARM(ISH)
EASY TO TUNE
WILL STAY TUNED

Its all about tuning. I say go for neither. If your price range is about $150, save some more and get a Brass snare or a spun brass snare (i.e. Black Beauty). A steel Ludwig 400 or something along those lines will work too.

A nice maple snare will run more money. If you want a cutting crack, diecast hoops will make it cut more and will cut similar to a steel drum.

Steel will be brighter/drier, maple or other woods will be warmer sounding (more note like tone). Shallow will have a faster snare response, deeper a slower snare response but more body to the sound.
Any good quality snare should stay tuned well if the head is in good condition. Snares are a matter of taste , like microphones. You really ought to smack a few to make up your mind. I'd never buy a snare (for my main snare) without hearing it first.

I would rather stick with Sonor 3005. If you can find a nice snare for less than $150, then send me the site. As for testing snares out, the only music store near me only sells really really crappy snares. the few that are nice (like the mike portnoy snare) are really expnsive. Wait... does the Sonor 3005 steel snare sound anything like the steel melody master (mike portnoy) snare? cuz if it does, then I'm going with the steel snare.

???????????????????

Get a metal snare like people said a maple snare is not going to give you so much kick as most metal snares but there are maple snares on the market that are great for rock music. Check out some Gretsch Drums they will be awesome for you to use.

I did some research. Im gonna go with the steel snare. Thanx for all the help.

i meant price research lol. Steel is cheaper.

because every steel shell (within reason) is made in the same factory overseas!

my current snare was about $10...

The drum on that link is a Mapex Black Panther Phosphor Bronze Snare drum.

I have heard that Black panther snare drums r nice.

just posting to get some attention... i need this to be answered ASAP. I want to try to get a new snare by the time my friends and i jam... which shud be next week... So i wanna order it today.

CHoices r: SOnor force 3005 maple or steel, or Mapex Black Panther Phosphor Bronze Snare drum. Feel free to add some more suggestions... but please don't confuse me. I dont really have the time to debate which snare to get.

ur a fuckin dumb ass. Dont buy drums like that. Go into a store and find one you like. If you are a bad enough drummer not to have an opinion for yourself, you dont need a new snare.

I dont live enar a music store, that sells good snare drums, there is no way I can test them out. My momwent to greece, and I really cant get to a music store.

You want to hear a Black Panther Snare in action? These are some friends of mine. I've known their Rhythm Section for 20 years.

Save these.
If you like Dream Theater and Progressive Metal/ Hard Rock, you'll be into this. Greg Arena (Lead Singer/Guitarist/Keyboard player in this band)is perhaps the best local songwriter we have. The guy just churns out incredible song after incredible song. If anybody in Florida has sold their soul to be a songwriter - it's him! LOL

This was recorded at Morrisound studio (where virtually most of the best Metal recordings of the last 20 years have been recorded. Tons of Death Metal bands and Power metal bands have recorded there.)

Jim Morris liked the snare so much he added a bunch of Snare strikes from it to his sample collection!

Charlie's using a Remo kit in that... it looks like a "prismatic" kind of finish (It changes colors depending upon where you are standing looking at the kit)color, but the snare is a 6.5"x14" Black Panther.

I think you should check out the Firecracker snares from Pearl. they come in 10" and 12" both wood and metal. theyre really cheap too. they got pretty good reviews, and im thinking bout getting a second snare myself, and ill be trying them out soon.
