If you mic the top and bottom of a snare, should one of the mics have the phase inverted?

does it matter where the two mics are placed/ pointed as far as phase is concerned?

thanks.

It really depends on each specific situation. Most of the time I would say the bottom mic gets phase inverted but the way I have mine mic'd right now, I leave it as is. Don't just flip the phase because you read that you should though, have a listen to it normal and with the phased switched and just keep it however it sounds better.

hey-
thanks for the response,

so, is there any possible drawback to inverting it if it isn't needed? (just wondering, i totally get what you're saying about using my ears to judge)

Not really, cause you can always flip the phase later.... So you just pick what sounds better. A really big important rule of thumb is:

If it sounds good, it is good.

Remember that....

You have to think about the other mics around the kit as well. If most of them are pointed down, while your bottom snare mic points up, then you may need to flip the phase.

When I tracked my final project at my school I thought I would flip the phase on the bottom snare mic, but I ended up thinking it sound better left alone....you can hear it on the link on my sig if you want
