I've been digging around he web to see if there is a standard color code for snakes. The only solid reference that I've found is from Belden. the Hosa snake that I have does not have the Belden colors or the resistor color set (Or WE for that matter). Looking through the Hosa site and catalog just tells me that they are color coded but not if there is a color to numeric standard.

Anybody know about snake color coding?

No standard that I know of. I use two Hosa 8-channel RCA-RCA snakes with my TSR-8, but back in the day I worked with snakes that had all black wires, which were numbered.

:)

Hi,

I am sure this is the standard for 8 channel colour coded snakes, (well this is the correct colours for the cables I have anyway). I don't know what happens if there are more than 8 channels:

1 = brown
2 = red
3 = orange
4 = yellow
5 = green
6 = blue
7 = purple
8 = grey

Cheers

Alan.

Resistor color code

That is the resistor color code. Works for some snakes that I read about (purple, make that violet). The Hosa snakes I have do not have the right colors. it is missing brown and purple.

Attached is the belden snake color code chart which follows the scheme your cables have. The chart goes up to 60.

I am so confused here.
What for?!
I thought that they (jacks and/or cables of the snake) are "colored" (or marked in any fashion) simply for the purpose so you know which one on one end is which on the other :). Stick it into what ever "number" you feel like.
What am I missing here? :D
:o:o:o

or are you building something "hard-wired" and wish to use some color-coded connections between units, blocks or what ever and do it in accordance with some "standard"???

hardwired brain

I suspect that I have it hardwired into my brain. Color codes that is. In documenting studio setup (you do keep a log or diagram don't you?). Having a numeric id makes for a nice shorthand.

Plus my BL often looks like BK and BR. Once when someone looked at my mispelled scribble they commented that I must be a doctor;)

I find things like 38input5 to work well.

Oh yes, for those of us who use color codes and have them etched in our brains to have something like GREEN causes a psysic-dissononce to wrack our brains.

STAY AWAY from my crossroad, and I'll try to avoid yours. :D:D:D

seriously though,
you can "create" your own "color/number standard" and always follow it when connecting things. I kind of have mine "standard", not really, but I follow the idea of "stereo pair", such as:
white - 1 (left)
red - 2 (right)
blue - 3 (left)
orange -4 (right) ...etc
so Left(s) are dark/cold colors and rights(s) are bright/hot colors

sorting out, what ever colors in the snake are available.
