What exactly are you considering buying for live use? All the SMpro products on the MF page linked look like they're studio oriented...

Which model Mackie? So your saying you want to go from this pre to the non-XLR inputs on the Mackie? That should work, but for $99 I can't imagine this pre is very good.

Make sure you read the user reviews on the MF web site, there are some very negative comments. Many of the complaints are about the same kinds of problems, a bad sign. It looks like a waste of a $100 to me.

Just so I understand what you need this for, are you saying you are running low level signals like mics into the 1/4" inputs on your Mackie? And that until now you've been using transformers to do that? If so, it sounds like you definitely need some preamps. However, if you could give a little more detail as to what equipment and sound sources you are working with it would help.

You'd be a lot better off with a unit like the Yamaha MLA7 or MLA8. You might be able to find a used MLA7 for a good price. I used to have one, they are a solid piece of gear and sound good.

Using a Mackie CR-1604 mixer. It has 6 xlr inputs the rest are 1/4.
I have been using Low Z - Hi Z Transformer adapters on some of the other inputs for drum mics. This is not for recording it is only for live use.
I was just looking for a way to get rid of the LZ-HZ Transformer adapters and inprove the sound without spending a lot of money.

The expansion pod for the 1604 isn't that much. I'll bet you can find one cheap on eBay.

Cool, I did not know they made one. I will check it out.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Those CR-1604 expansion pods were called the "XLR10". You might get lucky, but they could be real hard to find. You might want to try to google "XLR10", as google might turn up a dealer with an old one in stock. The XLR10 was discontinued a *long* time ago. Finding an eight channel preamp could end up being a lot easier and faster.
