I am currently having trouble smoothing out the guitar tone on my recordings. I am having trouble in both direct/and micing of the guitars. It all has this sort of high endy, grainy, gritty texture. I am after like the Far Beyond Driven guitar sound from Dimebag. It is brutally heavy and thick, but it has great smoothness, it isn't at all harsh to your ears. Is this something that can be fixed with a preamp, tube modeling unit, or what have you.
I am recording the direct guitars through a Johnson J Station directly into my Roland VS2480cd, and micing the guitar cabinet with an SM57 off axis about an inch from the cone. The amp is a Line 6 Flextone Ful Stack, with a Line 6 2X12, and 4X12 cab. I need silky smoothness.....
