Smoke and guitar electronics

I've been told many times never to use condenser mics in smoky or humid venues, but I don't know the reasons behind it. Could somene explain that to me, and also tell me if the same consideration should be taken for guitar electronics? I've been playing in a lot of bars so far on the tour, and I don't want my acoustic-electric to die from it.
