Does anyone other than myself love the smashing pumpkins distorted guitar tone? I'm just wondering how they get that big wall of sound. I'm guessing that they doubled the guitar parts and they probably tweaked the amps in the studio to get it sounding just right. It just sounds so nice and solid and full. Anyway, i just thought i would blab on about that, thanks for listening!, J

For the guitar sound on "Drown" try a distortion with the level at about 50%, tone around 50% and gain all the way up. Next you'll add some delay, set the rep to about 25% the delay time all the way up and the mix at about half. Then add some phaser, speed at about 15% depth 100% and regeneration at 20%. That should get you pretty close. You'll also need a guitar with single coil pickups, like a strat.

I like the smashing pumpkins but their tone almost seems brittle and frail a lot. Almost like they have a Q filter on the rhythem guitar. Has that sort of "Honk" sound.

For some of the walls of guitar on Siamese Dream, they used 90+ tracks. Keep in mind that this was an obsessive guitar album, created over the course of a long period of time, by one guitarist and one producer who had the same vision.

The general tools to get the Siamese Dream sound are Marshall amps (JCM 800 I think), Marshall 4x12 cabinets, American Standard Strats (with a mix of Lace Sensors, and some with humbuckers in the bridge position), and the most important tool: the Big Muff Pi. If you need to pick only one of these tools, just get a Big Muff, it will get a similar sound through most amps, though not quite the same. Also remember to try many different combos of tone and gain controls on both the big muff and on your amp, until you find the magic. And remember, 2 guitars at least.

From the previous link:
All of the Siamese Dream rhythm sound was done by plugging an EH Big Muff Pi into the low gain input of a 1984 JCM 800 2203 head set so the preamp gain is just on the edge of overcoloring the sound, and the master is all the way up. The head was modded for KT-88 power tubes because Billy thought they added a very round fat tone to his sound which is a huge part of the Siamese Dream sound.

Okay, try this. Set your distortion level at 75%, tone at 60% and gain at 75%. Add some stereo chorus set at level 40% speed 10% depth 10% and EQ about half. That should get you close to the sound of "Everlong."

Hows that?

Holy crap, killer answers, Firebird! Lots of ideas to play around with.

Now how about Entombed's gigantic "Swedish" guitar sound from "Clandestine", or any of their records?? ;) :D :D :D ;)
