ive got it narrowed down to the Sennheiser MD 421 II or the Shure SM7B. I think either would probalby be fine, but i am planning on buying one of these mics and using equally for vocals and guitar cabs (heavy distortion). I also would like to use whichever one i buy as maybe a snare or bass drum mic.

Can anyone tell me what these mics record well?

I know md421 is used on toms a lot but ive heard they are good for most things.

Im actually leaning towards the sm7b because ive heard its better for vocals, but which one is better for guitar cabs?

Thanks for any suggestions.

BTW, is anyone else obsessing over dynamic mics like me?

I had a sm7b for a week and sold it. It just didnt work for the vocal stuff I wanted it for. And it will not make a good kick mic. The 421 is going to be much better at all of those things, In my opinion than the 7b would be.

sm7.. got it, use it. Never used it on drums tho, Got an RE20 and a coupla atm25s for that

I own an RE20 and am looking to add an SM7B at some point. The RE20 is a great kick mic. I haven't been blown away by it on my voice, but it works fine and would be good for hard rock/metal/screamo vocals, imo. It is totally solid on guitar cabs. I guess the main reason I want the SM7B is because I've heard it's a slightly better vocal mic than the RE20. The Sennheiser is supposed to be very versatile, but I've never used it. None of these mics would be my choice for snare, just due to their size (although I'm sure they'd sound killer).

Yeah, I guess you could say I'm moderately "dynamic crazy."
