What are the chief differences that you notice (in sound and useability) between the SM7 and smaller hand-held dynamics? Such as, 57's, 58's, Sennheiser 835, etc.

Fatter, cleaner, bigger, than any of those. It works on a great many voices and instruments. One of my favorite cab mics as well

I have to say it's smoother, is better balanced, & has more depth.

Thanks everyone. Just the kind of info I was looking for.

Ok now do the same SM7 vs RE20/27.
I say the same stuff about the re27, but everytime i hear everyone get all hot an bothered about the SM7 i start to wonder if it would be worth getting or just do what the RE27 does a little differently.

I like how the RE20 handles low mids on down over a 7, and I think the 7 better reproduces high mids. I genearlly don't like either for anything over around 6-8khz. All things being equal and in the 'sweet' spot, a 7 usually sounds smoother to me. Sometimes that's good... sometimes its not!

they are great mics that complement each other...as in if one doesn't work - the other will. the re 20 is 'clearer.'

different mics get em both. look for a pl20 - same thign as an re20 but cheaper...

I think the SM58 makes my voice too thick. Do you think this would be the same with the SM7?
