Hello I need a mic for my soundcard and I might be getting an sm58 but Ive heard that a lot of mics out there are pretty good to for dynamic vocals. What is the name of the audio technica mic that compares to the sm58?

right lets ask differantly. For example do some of the senheiser vocal mics compare to the shure sm58 quality wise cos they seem a little less pricy and easier to find second hand

If you want the sound of a 58, then why not buy the 58????

well lets say that Im saving up for a tube amp so Id like to keep the price down. But if I can find an sm58 or 57 for 50-75$ i'll take it!

yeah but youre in america. The average second hand cost in europe is 90euros (about 110$). the best I can do is import from usa.

Look for a Beyerdynamic M400 (AKA Soundstar MKII) on Ebay. Looks like a 58, sounds like a 7, usually goes for less than a ton (I bought mine for £40). :)

Here's one

Sennheiser e825. It's comparably priced with the SM58 here in America, but maybe it's more available overseas without a price markup.

im not shure about that. We used e825's at my old church and they werent very clear mics. I could hear the differance when we used sm58's

They are different. I like mine over my 58, but that's just me I guess. :)

I'd take any of the Sennheiser E series over the 57/58 ... but that Beyer Soundstar is quality.

Speaking of which ... Mark, when did you get one?????

Hmm

June or July. It's hard to remember exactly. All I can tell from looking at my ebay profile is that I bought one mic on June 21st and another on July 31st. One of those was the Soundstar, the other was an M101.

58-like AT mic

dnl88:

You might have originally asked about the AT ATM27HE (hotter than a 58) or AT ATM41HE (about the same output and closer response to the 58). The 58 is slightly less expensive. Both the AT mics are good and you could hammer nails with the 27HE (a 58 ain't to shabby in the durability category, either).

The absolute cheapest mic that I can tell you that decently emulates the 58 is a Behringer XM8500---about $20.

It was said before: If you want a 58, why not get a 58? Their popularity and longevity is there for a reason.

The Beyer M69 is hardly an "SM58-like" mic... it's got a COMPLETELY different sound - much brighter top end than the 58.

Wicked. Hope your fever clears up soon, btw, cos I quite fancy thieving your signature at some point in my life.

Right you are. As I understand it, the original poster is looking for alternatives, and the M69 qualifies, especially if you're east of the Atlantic. It's a high-quality hand-held vocal mic in about the same price range.

Fever!?!?!?

Yes, the one that requires you to have the Bruce Dickinson cowbell signature. I hope you're well soon, and will let someone else have a turn with it.
