I hear all this about the SM57. Wheres the SM58. Was it an upgrade or a downgrade to go from 57 to 58???? In your opinion

Not my opinion - more like fact... the SM58 and 57 use the same capsule - the 58 has different casing and windscreen oriented more for live vocal use.

Same guts on the inside........

Not up- or down-grade, just different sides of a coin. I've seen both used in the other's natural environment perfectly well.

As most folks have already stated, the 58 is basically a 57 with a ball windscreen added. The ball was basically added for live vocal use where a pop-screen is inconvenient. With good mic technique the 57 will work fine for this as well but the 58 is a little better with sibilance than the 57 in everyday live use.

Some will argue with this, but I can't hear the difference between a 57 and a 58 with the ball removed.
