Background:

I have a USB condenser mic that I've been podcasting with. I love that "smexy" radio voice, but at the cost of having to be very close to the mic. I can't focus on my computer and it takes up a lot of space on the desk.

I'd like to repeat this radio sounding voice quality, but with the ability to keep the mic away from my face (2ish feet) and away from my monitors required FoV.

A friend uses the SM57 and achieves just this, the hitch is that he's plugging it in to mixer equipment worth thousands of dollars.

I have an Asus Xonar Essence ST (can't url) with a 6.35mm line in, but I've heard about latency issues. I was looking at something like the Blue Icicle because it will only ever be used with a computer and have no need for multiple inputs.

I'm hoping that with a DIY pop filter, a space saving stand for desks or beside a desk that one of you suggest :D, a mic built for cardioid vocals at an arm's length distance, and something like these USB preamps will give me that radio voice I so desire without having to be so close to the mic.

Do you think this goal is reasonable for a budget of $150?
Thanks.

I'm more and more convinced that something like the M-Audio AudioBuddy would serve me better. Though it means I'd be plugging into the sound card, which I dont think is an issue eh?
