Is there such a thing?

I own a SM57 and would like the ability to "switch" my 57 into a 58 then back again (to save money of cource). Obviously if it was as easy as screwing on the windscreen no one would buy both mics and SURE would lose profits.

I would have thought since they share "guts" that the windscreen would be available seperate, or that a "mod" could be done to attatch the screen, the only problem I could foresee would be if the housings are different.

If anyone has any knowldege of this, please share.

Thanx

As far as I know, they are the same, I just own one 58, and if I use it for something other than vocals, I take the ball off, and use it like a 57. The ball really does make a difference in the sound. You would be surprised. I would say just buy 57's, unless you are using them for live vocals. 57's are great for miking drums and guitar cabs, and the only thing you would need the windscreen for is vocals, but there are plenty of way better vocal mics, but then again, the 58 would be useful for the type of singer who likes to hold the mic or maybe a "screamo" type singer,k so maybe have one around. To be honest, I don't think it makes much of a difference

If I slap my head any harder ... um ... well ...

The good news is that the scoop on the SM57/58 has been revealed many times before. Go to the 'Similar Threads' bit at the bottom - you'll thank me later.

:)

Haha, awesome! I never noticed the similar threads thing. looks like I'll have more fun than ever on here

Actually they arent the same. Check out the Shure website, you will see the frequency graph and specs are different. Not only that, but a blind mic test i did with the two on a floor tom, the SM58 turned out to sound a lot warmer. Just sell your 57, and buy a 58. Then you can use the 58 as a 57 by removing the windscreen and taking advantage of the proximity effect (someone correct me if i am wrong). You wont loose anything that way because the 58 captures some warmth (low-mids?) that the 57 doesnt.

*sigh*

THE CAPSULES IN THE 57/58 ARE *THE SAME*... THE DIFFERENCE IN FREQ. GRAPHS IS DUE TO THE CASING, AND THE DISTANCE OF THE CAPSULE FROM THE WINDSCREEN.

ALL-CAPS USUALLY MEAN SHOUTING..... I AM. MAYBE IT WILL SINK IN.

Well thanks for the responses.

I know that they are the same mics internally, I was wondering if there is anyway to attach the windscreen from a 58 onto a 57...does it simply thread on? Will it not fit at all? I already have the 57.

Just buy one of those foam windscreens, they come in lots of colors :)

You know, you can skip the thread and not post in it if it is too wearying for you.

The housing is different. The 58 is a little wider and has threads for the windscreen, the 57 does not.

I've never seen how you can take the windscreen off a 57. I've always seen that it just spins and spins and spins and spins and spins (ad infinitum).

It is a well known fact they are the same capsule in different bodies. The internal reflections inside the grill are enough to change the graph.

Thank you thats what I needed to know.

PS this may be what I'm looking for

I used to have one of those on my 57. A friend of mine borrowed my 57 for a project about 5 years ago and swapped my 57 for his 58 as a temporary trade. I may have to get that 57 back and get another wind screen for it. It also prevents shocks when you touch your mouth on it.

Bruce - chill out. Everyone knows they're different completely. I've always thought of the SM58 as 'warmer' and the 57 as more 'gritty' .... nah I'm shitting you!:rolleyes::p

The 57 and 58 are totally different. They are made in two completely different Chinese facilities. I think the original 57 was made using some crashed UFO parts and old musket barrels.
I think i'm making that up.

Plus, also, if you actually put the SM58 in your hand you can feel that it's warmer.

If you scrape some sandpaper with a 57 you can tell that it's grittier. For real.

Blue Bear is,... eh,... right. Don't let that go to'yer head, ok?

Just buy the SM57 and a foam windscreen, and pop it on/off as needed,...
& you're "there".

I like the one about crashed-UFO parts and old musket barrels, though.;)

With proper mic technique I haven't need a pop screen with a 57. My first "good" mic was a Shure P54, which was a high impedance version of the 57 but was built to mount on a stand. I used it for a while with one of the windscreens you listed above. It worked alright, but that foam gets pretty funky after a while. I hated the feel of singing into it.

Blessings, Terry
