SM57 Directly into Delta 44

Is it possible to run an SM57 directly into a delta 44 if I use a XLR to TRS adapter? I thought you had to have a preamp before the delta, but a friend of mine is running a 57 right into the delta, and he's getting a good level, however, I have not heard the sound quality yet.

I tried running various mics directly into my Delta 44
(When I realized my Behri mixer was adding a few dB of noise.)

The sound quality, is no different than with my Behri preamps,
Just a lot less noise.
 
this should actually NOT work.
The delta 44 is NOT a preamp, nor does it have any associated with it unless you have the Omni Studio.

If people ARE getting sound from this, I'm very surprised if it sounds decent (or loud enough) at all. Any preamp would be better than NO preamp! ha!
 
Well, like I said...

I get enough signal (On high spl sources such as drums)
And it sounds no different than with the preamps, aside from the noise issue.

I'm sure If I had better preamps, it might be a different story.
 
Last night, the drummer I was helping set up was getting a good level off a 57 straight into the delta - I haven't hear it yet tho. I am inclined to believe disposable is right, even though logic tells me it shouldn't work.
 
again, i think this is wrong. haha.
mic's NEED power, from a preAMP (AMP, ha!)... the delta 44 breakout box just is wires. open it up, there is no extra power besides what it takes to get the signal to the card.
 
I dunno. When I record drums, esp kick & close mic'd snare I have to back off the pres to just above zero so it don't clip

i dont' know if that is entirely true. condensor mics need power (in the form of phantom power) but dynamics don't work quite the same way. I could see it working BUT if you had a nice preamp you would be able to see a big difference.

I think what Shackrock meant was that mics have a very tiny signal, and it needs to have a gain stage (which requires some power to accomplish the amplification) between it and a line level input. Without a preamp, the mic level signal is inadequate. Perhaps by cranking up gain on the Line In, or digitally processing the recorded signal, you could get a audible result, but it would be buried in noise and quite bad compared to a signal from a proper signal chain.

The reason I asked is that I think there might be some cheap mics that put out a line-level signal -- they would likely need a battery to power a small preamp circuit in the mic body, though...
 
Ah... no most of the ones I use are not line-level...
Though they do have hot outputs.
I do have one battery powered condenser, though.
