2&4
Hi Guys! Look what i found on Soundcraft site (btw, some cool data and links : http://www.soundcraft.com/palz.asp )

FAQ Section:
Can I use +48v Phantom supply with dynamic microphones connected to the mic XLR inputs?

It is possible to use BALANCED dynamic microphones when the +48v phantom is on. The microphone coil 'floats' up with the voltage preventing damage to the microphone by ensuring 'zero' volts across the microphone coil.
If the dynamic microphone is configured UNBALANCED (where pins 1 & 3 are connected together), then the dynamic microphone will be damaged. This is because one side of the microphone coil is connected to ground, with the other side connected to +48v. Thus, +48v will be across the microphone coil causing it to burn out.
Always ensure the Mic lead is balanced when using +48v phantom power.

Ok, so, the question is... Can i damage my SM57 and my D112 if i use an standard xlr cable and phantom... (in the firepod you only can asign phantom 4 channels at the same time, so in some setups i "need" to send +48v to the 57 and the 112 too)

I use both of those mics and I've never had a problem with phantom.

Buy a separate phantombox, instead of using the crappy one in the firepod. By crappy I mean you can't assign it per channel.

It's usually the phantom power opamp that dies and not the microphone. Most lower to mid end recording consoles have a warning about it in the users guide. You may not kill it on the first try but eventually you will kill the opamp.

SoMm

As long as you use proper mic cables, phantom power will not harm the 57 or D112.

I have had the phantom power turned on on every channel of my Soundcraft for 8 years. I have never lost a mic or lost phantom on any channel. Ribbon mics are different (I have heard conflicting stories on this) but dynamics are OK with it.

You are fine EXCEPT if your cable is bad IE: one signal wire is disconnected. Always check your cables if you use phantom power on anything other than a condensor mic.

Get a cable tester. They are cheaper than new mics.

While we're on the topic of phantom power,I suggest that you always turn off your phantom power, or even your whole interface, before plugging/unplugging your mics. I have heard this can cause severe damage to the mics and the interface/mixer/phantom power supply if all of the pins aren't disconnected at exactly the same moment. That being said, I've never had a problem with it when I have accidentaly done it a couple times, but why take the chance.

personally i turn all phantom power off every time it is not being used.

I've not had any problems with it, but it pays to observe good practice, i.e. switching it off when not needed and before plugging/unplugging cables and mics.
