if combined with a Delta 1010 would that be a decent setup for a new fella like myself? or would the presonus be better seeing as it's only 100-200 more?

The SMPro PR8 is a piece of crap. There's lots wrong with the circuit. It's discussed in detail over at www.prodigy-pro.com/forum if you're interested, but in general, the unit is fixed gain, with a volume control on the output. The problem with this is it's easy to overload the first gain stage with loud sources, and turning down the volume knob won't help because it's already clipped before getting to that stage. Also, they really WAY overdesigned the filtering for stability on the opamp feedback circuits, basically low passing everything above 15kHz. Not Good. Definitely look at something else. I don't know how much the M-Audio Octane is going for nowadays, but I like mine a lot. The presonus unit will also beat the pants of the SMPro one.

It's what I started with. literally. If you can get something better do it, but if you can't afford better than it'll do - just don't expect more results than you've paid for...
