Has anyone used one of these? What pre-amp would you compare it to? For $200 it seems that it would sound awful.

I've got one but I call it the PR7 because one of the preamps hasn't worked from day one. Makes me worry how long the rest will last.

The only thing I have to compare it to are the built in preamps of the digi001 and the built in preamps of low end mixing boards. Doing an A/B comparison I'd say the pr8 sounds a little more muddy. But it is close enough in quality to the digi 001 pre amps that I can't tell the difference for the most part.

You get what you pay for. I'm happy with the $250 I spent. (Yeah, $250. I bought it before the price came down).

Its like a Hoontech or something, I was lucky to come upon my Yamaha MLA7 for the same money, If it has opamps it can be modded, thats an upside. If one channel hasnt worked from day one Id be inside checking for cold solder joints.

Hey, what DOES that MLA7 sound like, anyway? Just curious - saw one on ebay for cheap and was tempted to pick it up, even though I just bought a digimax...

Reminds me of the DMP3, not much in the way of color but a strong clean pre that beats most mixer pres. Ive been thinking of taking the 451 dual op-amps out and putting in some Burr Brown 2604 in thier place to make them sound more like a grace 801, but I put it off and now Im paralysed on my left side and will need help soldering them.
