Hey guys i just bought an sm-57 and a regular three prong mic-cable, and so it attatch to the mr-8 in the mic input spot, and tried recording. What im finding is that i have to turn it all the way up to peak to get anything at all, and even then it's very faint. Please tell me im doing something wrong and that it's not ganna be like this.

The bad news is that from this and other forums it seems that the problem you describe is a Fostex thing, seems to be like that on VFs as well.
You could try a preamp.

preamps

very common, the preamps are week in most of these recorders, use a inexpensive mixer to run the mics through, dont jsut ge a preamp, a mixer has some eq control and phantom power for condensor mics

ok, that's not so bad since i was planning on getting this http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--YAMMG102 anyway. This is ganna get off-topic, so sorry everyone, but im planning on using that mixer to record a bunch of drum tracks at one time and i guess mix it all onto one track while recording onto the mr-8, since the mr-8 only has two inputs. Is this a good idea?

Yep! You can mic up the drums and send the stereo tracks to the MR-8 on either 5/6 or 7/8, since they are both stereo tracks. I have an MR-8 too, and the pre amps are very weak. If you don't have a pre amp, you're sucking.

drums

works great, just fuss around awhile getting he best drum mix you can, mocing mics and all, sont forget two overhead mics, one for the toms, one for the kick..... get it sounding just right on playback, then do your takes

that's a cool looking little mixer, anyone using it?

just got it, it's pretty cool, it's definatley worth it's money i'd say.

good little mixer

It's probably one of the best low priced pieces of equipment I own.
