I am curious to know about artists that have used an SM-57 for vocals on an album.Anybody know?I do not have a condensor yet so this is what I use.Sounds good to me.......

Many have.
Keep in mind, however, the rest of their signal path DOESN'T include a Behringer mixer, cheap soundcard, ART tube pre, etc.
Having said that, here are some well known '57 users that have
had hit recordings with it;

1) Stephen Tyler (usually double miked with Sennheiser shotgun)
2) Paul Rodgers (likes to sing without headphones to monitors)
3) Madonna (entire Erotica album recorded with it)
4) John Lennon (during his solo releases)
5) Bruce Springsteen ("Born In The USA" has a # of '57 tracks)
6) Darryl Hall (used on "Sara Smile")
7) Bono (The U2 one-not Sonny!)
There many more...

Anthony from the Red Hot Chili Peppers used an sm57 for all his vocals on Californication. And an Sm7 on Blood Sugar.

A favorite of producer Phil Kramer, you will hear alot of the 70s atlantic label artists using it, most notably Robert Plant, and Paul Rogers.

Yeah, as a matter of fact.....

I had a guy and his band in to do a CD (Groove Kitchen - "Poor White Thrash"). His voice was raspy and a little nasally, worked great with his material.

We tried every mic we had on him for the vocal dubs - granted we were poor, so that list was...like.......Steadman large diaphragm dynamic, Shure sm-94, EV re-11 and 15, sm58, AT 63HE, etc.

Anyway, nothing was even CLOSE to working on him except the 57 - it was just...perfect. It was run through a Aphex tube preamp onto Adat blackface with a little comp to tape. .....perfect.

Anyway, just cause its cheap dont be afraid to try it - you NEVER know.

What about Jim Morrison, even though I beliece that was only ised for live singing in his case!

bono has used an sm58 on all his studio vocals since achtung baby.

Jim Morrison also used the Sennheiser 421 live. (so did Janis Joplin)
Bono has also been using a Shure Beta 58 for recording per his producer
Joe Chicarelli.

The first person to come to mind is Sir Paul McCartney... it's his favorite studio vocal mic. Not too shabby, huh?

Maybe I'm not recording the right style of music for it, or maybe I'm just not a good enough engineer, but I've never used an SM57 on recorded vocals in my studio. Admittedly I do very little metal.

It never seems to provide the clarity, detail, and shimmer that vocalists that I tend to record prefer. Again, could be more a reflection of my skill than the mic itself.

Was surprised to read today, per a project studio owner/engineer, that
most of the vocals on the the first (self-titled) album by Boston were done
on the '57. Of course having Brad Delp helped a bit!

On the right singer and right song--the SM57 is killer. It puts you into a ballpark that a condenser sometimes can't touch. Its all about the attitude and color you are looking for. I wouldn't want to record Povarotti with one--but a rock vocalist--yeah, man!

I use an SM57 on vocals.

There's nothing wrong with that. Don't let them tell you the SM57 is just an instrument mic, it's an all around utilitarian mic. All that stuff about whether the SM57 is suitable for vocals or not is just a marketing ploy, or a diversion tactic intended to sell you another mic.

Even "gear God" Fletcher from www.mercenary.com thinks VERY
highly of the Shure SM57 and he's been know to sell a "few" high end microphones. (not that I ALWAYS agree with him!)
Only a few other microphones, like the various Studio Projects
condensers, EV RE20, and Neumann U87 seem to work well on
so many different types of singing voices.

Long live the '57! :)

I use the SM57 on everything, and it's my main mic of choice.

I have an assortment of lesser grade Audio-Tehnicas and older Teac mics that I don't use much, a couple need repair to the cords. The SM57 gets used for everything, unless there's a shortage, but there hardly ever is, because I have 4.

Some people may think that's overly simplistic, but it suits me just fine. Pls go search out my latest audio meanderings over at NWR, all done recently with the SM57.

Hopefully you guys know my NWR name by now. PM me if you don't. C'ya later!

What's "NWR"?

Nowhere Radio. In the MP3 forum, about 80% of the postings are hosted through NWR. They will give you 15 megs of space for free and you can get unlimited space for 24 bucks a year.

I wish more folks here in the mic and rack forums would post MP3's of their incredible gear and sessions, so others could hear what kind of results certain gear can provide. I just say this because, on this BBS, there seems to be a division between the gear forums and the MP3 forum. It would be cool to integrate this stuff a bit more.

OK. Off my soapbox. :D
