sm 57 for drum micing??

whats your thought on using the Sure sm-57 to record drums to didgital, is there a mic comperable in price and restlts, also i have two old sure pe54 pistol grip mics from 1975 are they made any better or worse than the mics today??

The SM57 is supposedly the most oft-used mic for snare drums and amplifier cabinets.
 
You'll be suprised of how many pro engineers say they recently started using SM-57s to mic toms again after years of using 421s or even mics nearly 6xs the price of a 57. They forgot how great they sound. Myself included.
 
so i could use the 57's on the toms, a sennheiser ?? on the kick and a ?? on the snare, i have 1 Sure 58 for the whole room and i should use a ?? for overheads-thanks anyone!also in a previous post, talking about my 2 pe54 Sure mics, they have a female end, and all cables are female end, are these cables still made or am i out of luck? my expierence with jerry-rigging cables end up with static or sounding like crap. thanks for any help!!

For micing a snare use a 57, a popular mic for the kick would be a AKG D112 and for over heads you should look at a condensor or a super flat dynamic. I could be wrong, and please someone correct me if i am, but i don't think the 58 will be much use for micing drums as a room mic.
Also i'm shore you can still get cables that are male to male (if that was what you were asking).
 
57's will work on everything except, Bass drum, overhead(s) and room.
58 would be terrible for a room mike - a waste of time, in my opinion.

Good kick mikes = AKG d112, Sennheiser 421, Shure Beta 52, Audio Technica ATm 25

Get a reasonably good condenser or condensers for overhead(s) - there's tons of them avail from $80 to thousands.

I wouldn't worry about cables as long as they work. If you are buying them, get ones with warranty, guarantee - cause eventually they ALL fail at one point or another.
