I play guitar, and can keep a beat or two on drums, but have never owned a set. I have a little money (450$, I need about 100 for cymbals too!) saved up and now I'm looking to buy a drum set to have fun with/jam with buddies/ record basic stuff on.

In my search, I ran across a neat looking cocktail set made by slingerland and was wondering what real drummers thought of them.

Is it ridiculous to think that this set could be used for those fore-mentioned tasks (power-pop, hard rock, country music)

Thanks for any insight, Nick.

A cocktail set wold not be a coggod choice for the styles you mention (may on certain country or pop tunes).

I owned a cocktail set for a while - which I used in a rock-a-billy jam band (we were doing a Stray Cat's type gig - and they wanted me to play standing up).

If you want a small drum set - try to check out the Mapex Voyager (it's right in the $400 range - or less used). I have gotten very good sound out of a Voyager set (both live and in the studio). While the shells are not big enough for "hard rock" they can be tuned down for a fairy fat sound.

Yeah, that is what I thought about the cocktail set, but it just looks so damn neat I head to at least ask.

My wife used the Expresso starting out. It's pretty close to junk. Upgraded to a Tama Stagestar-great set for the money and it's very compact.
