BLUES & SOUL HIP-HOP COLUMN (PRINTED IN B&S 988 / YING YANG TWINS COVER / JAN 31 - FEB 13 2007)
HIP-HOP JUNKIES
If you're looking for a hefty dose of mid-'90s nostalgia, Slept On Fam's "Audio Crack" might just be the album for you. Comprised of UK-based producer Configa (formerly known as MC Unique) and Stateside emcees Wargasms, Arsenal and C Gully, this transatlantic quartet deliver dusty, bass-heavy beats and punchline-filled verses that call to mind '90s favourites such as Trends Of Culture and Rumpletilskinz. The rolling "Warriors March" features a weighty cameo from West Coast legend Chino XL, while "The Way They Do My Life" finds the crew dealing with all manner of day-to-day pressures over Configa's stirring production. "One More Chance" offers a striking sing-a-long hook as the group strive for spiritual salvation, each rhyming from the perspective of an individual about to meet their maker. The playful "That 70's Joint" boasts sharp "Shaft"-style guitar licks and pimped-out horns, as the three emcees effectively capture the decade's essence, spitting lyrics about platform boots, velour suits and afros. Overused title and a few redundant tracks aside, "Audio Crack" is an entertaining effort, although its retro underground charm will no doubt repel as many listeners as it attracts. It won't change the world, but it will make your head nod. Check www.myspace.com/sleptonfam.
