skipping

New to PC based recording. When I record through my tape, then save it to my pc recording/mixer. When I play it back I incounter a few skips / jumps within the first 10 to 20 secs. of the recording. This also happens if I record direct to the PC through a mic. What might my problem be?

The skipping is a data flow problem.

What type of sound card are you using to get your studio work into your computer?

I sometimes use an external Soundblaster usb unit on my laptop for field recording and it hiccups (skips) all over the place if I try to send too high a data stream through or if the laptop is too hot. USB 1.1 sucks.
