hey all. I need one mic pre for my home studio (a Tascam 388). I do most of the recording by myself, so I only use one good mic at a time. I think Im going to go with a Shure KSM-44...for its versatility. I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a good one-channel preamp. I dont really want/need something with loads of options...i would like something simple with maybe just a gain control. I would just like to add color and be able to get a little dirty on some things. I was recommended the UA M610 and a Trident (dont know the model name). any help would be awesome!

Maybe consider a rack and 1 mic pre! API, OSA, etc. With the 500 form factor becoming avaliable these days, this seems the way to go . Add another pre as you can afford or need it. You probably can get a OSA rack and one of their mic pres for around a grand! Definately the way I'm heading! :D

I would think that the Great River would be the best place to start. Personally, I love API preamps, but the Great River offers a little more versatility. I was less than impressed by the OSA's. Personally I would avoid the new "Trident" stuff. I am assuming that you were reccomended the new SE20 or whichever the model is. In my opinion the Great River or an API just kills the new trident stuff. I personally like the UA preamps, but they are really not all that flexible when it comes to getting a different sound. They do one sound, and do it very well, but it is certainly a piece I would use sparingly and as a result could never reccomend it to someone as a first real preamp.

All different colors in the box man. Some more to your liking than others. My favs include Phoenix DRS 1 (or 2 if ya got the $), John Hardy, and on the budget end I still like the safe sound (pre is not so much but the limiter , expander are great and the compressor is very usable

I like the OSA's A's,C's{love 'em on drums}and the L3 quite a bit, nice bottom and clear top end..But different strokes :) ..I do like the Great River NV's with the KSM 44's..matter of fact, come to think of it whenever I grab a 44 I always use the G/R..Im getting lazy and habitual :) Good luck
