Hey im new to this community and im just starting to record in college. these are some items i plan on getting for recording and what not:

Apogee Duet
Macbook Pro 2011 Model - no guarantees
Beats Solo HD
pop filter

Just some of the basic stuff that people would get to start off. I plan on recording both Vocals and an acoustic guitar. My question is should i use a single mic to record both sounds at the same time, or a single mic to record them individually, or 2 mics (one recording my vocals and one recording the guitar)

Whatever works best for you. I have a problem myself singing without playing my guitar at the same time so I try to do both at once. This is just me though. It seems more natural to me than singing in headphones to a previously recorded part where I am more concerned with staying in time with the first run and so lose the feel. The difference between 1 mic for both and 2 mics for both is the amount of control you will have of each part when you are done making your track. 2 mics will both pickup both your voice and your guitar, but based on where they are placed, you will have a guitar-heavy and a vocal-heavy track to work with. The honest sound of a room with all of its nuances, and the actual comparable volume levels of what you really sound like could be done with one mic further away from you, but I would prefer two mics closer to the sources myself. Doing a guitar track by itself and then overlaying the vocal track is a possibility, to keep your tracks isolated and easier to mix, but in my opinion (and this has much to do with the way I play, lots of speed ups and slowdowns and dynamic surges) it feels more 'real' when its recorded for real, even if the mixing is a bit more limited.

If you're going to do both at the same time use one mic for each. You will get a phantom center channel from the bleed off from one channel to the other.
