I recorded this clip to a Steely Dan" Backing track called home at last. I used my '66 Allen/master volume modded Bassman head running into a 1x12 cab loaded with a Celestion V-30. I recorded this on the bass channel using the Plexi setting. I was able to drive the amp enough to get a nice singing plexi tone. Here's the link, and it's the first clip on the page.

Nice tones bro. Great collection of Fenders you got there. Nice pool too. No compression on that clip? Wow!

Thanks Mike. Yea I'm a Fender lover I'll admit that. The only compression I used was on the mix down. I wanted to squash the signal a little so it wouldn't sound harsh. The tone's were sustaining and getting the natural compression straight from the amp.:)

I do love me some old Fender amps. What's the Allen master mod all about? Where do you get that done? How much? Sounded rather Soldano-ish on your clip!

My local amp guy does the Allen and master volume mod. David Allen of Allen amps no longer does the Allen mod anymore and has never done the master volume mod. My amp guy and him have know each other for a while and my amp guy always calls him with questions about stuff. Allen refers guys to my amp guy to perform the mod. The both discussed the master volume mod that's on the bass channel and picked this one to be the best. I'm not sure what's involved in the master volume mod,but here's what the Allen mod is all about. My guy can perform the both mods on your existing Bassman amp for about $250 plus shipping. If you're interested I'll get more info. Here's what the Allen mod is all about.

Bassman® Head conversion - there are lots of 65-70 Bassman® heads with the odd AB165 circuit which was quite a departure from traditional Fender circuits. The BASS channel is not really voiced well for guitar and is often not used. This conversion rebuilds the entire circuit board so the NORMAL channel is the more desirable AA864 circuit (about like the NORMAL channel of a Super Reverb) and the BASS channel becomes a really cool lead channel with a tweed/Plexi flavor to it. The DEEP switch goes between the huge cathode bypass capacitor associated with the 5F6A Bassman to the much smaller capacitor used with the Marshalls. This channel has an extra gain stage, is more aggressive and has more harmonics for a great lead channel. You can use an A-B switch to switch between the two channels with each having its own volume and tone controls. It makes a much more usable amp for guitar. Many end up preferring the BASS channel to the classic tone of the NORMAL channel. The conversion is $199 plus anything else that might be needed as part of normal service such as new filter capacitors, tubes, grounded power cord etc. I have done several of these and they are very popular. The modifications are reversible and there are no holes drilled or controls not properly labeled.:D

Ok, so now I gotta find a Bassman head and $250. Thanks, sounds like a plan.

Mike here's my amp guys auction. He's selling a beautiful amp that's got the Allen/master volume mod and a dual bias mod as well. With the dual mod,you can put in unmatched power tubes and bias them so the match perfectly. He's also including several pairs of power tubes. This amp is a Hell of a deal. I you need some more clips as to what the amp can do, here's some more.
