I recently bought a Sony MD (minidisk) recorder. I study voice and record my lessons. I would love to burn those onto a CD, which is not what the MD recorder/player is designed for, but I suspect there is a way to move the files from the player to a computer with a sound card and cd burner. I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 that should be able to handle the task. But I need to know what kind of cable and software I need.

Thanks for any help.

Yo Singer-Ringer-MD-clinger:}

Yea, verily, there is a way. I used to use an MD8 and if your gear is similar, and I think it is, you have a stereo out on the back of the box. From this, you can run your mix to cassette tape.

Or, with more gear, you can do CD. I have run recordings from my MD8 to cassette and cassette back to my Yam 2816 and from there to CD. Of course the tape will carry some "hiss" but there are methods to remove that too via Wave files.

But, you can keep it simple and still get a pretty good sound depending on your other gear: mic, mic pre, etc.

Keep singing.

Green, thansks but no stereo out. This is a Sony walkman. It has a headphones , mic, and line in, plus a usb. That's it.

If it has a USB port, can you just extract directly to your hard drive?

The sony walkman is designed to record music from a cd or off the internet. It is not designed to move files from the recording device to the computer. The software that comes with the device doesn't allow for that. BUT Sony said that if I had a sound card, which I do, and had a line in to my computer, I could take files off the walkman. I've tried the usb connection. I can't figure a way to take files FROM the walkman. Sony won't help because of copy right stuff. But I'm not violating copyright.

There has to be software or some simple computing trick that I haven't figured out. That's what I"m hoping someone here can help me with.

Run a line from the headphone jack to your line in on the soundcard you have. That should do the trick for you.

Patch It

NY Morningstar is right.

Take your headphones to an audio shop. Get a stero patch cord with jacks just like yours.

If they don't have them you can get 1/4 inch sheilded guitar/studio type cord but you will need stero adpters on each end and it should work fine.

You can get the adpters at wally world in the audio dept.

Good luck
