Sing through EHX Memory Man...

A band I like (Guided By Voices) gets a great vocal sound by singing through an Electro Harmonix memory man guitar pedal.

I bought the pedal, but the salesman at the store, as well as other musicians have told me : You CANNOT sing through a guitar pedal due to impedance problems, so YOU HAVE TO use a line matching adapter.

I bought the line matching adaptor (which goes from male 1/4" to Female XLR). Bought whenever I use it there is feedback galore !! It works much better WITHOUT the line matching adapter.

1. Does anybody else sing through guitar effects ?
2. Why would I need this line matching adaptor ?
 
You might try something like the Reamp box, or a D.I. box that can convert a signal from +4 to -10. Or you could plug a mic into a mixer, then reduce the level to somewhere around -10, or a level the memory man can handle. Then, you'll need to boast the signal back with another DI or Pre-amp. A special cable won't really cut it.

I'd recommend recording your vocals through a regular mic and preamp, then use the memory man as a send effect.
 
Sounds good... I have seen those DI boxes for sale, but never understood them. I will check it out, thanks.
 
You would use a Reamp box in that situation if you are using a preamp first but not a DI. If you are getting too much feedback then turn down the amp. You will also get less feedback with a more directional mic. What mic are you using? An SM57 would probably work well for that application.

Reamp boxes are a bit pricey. You might try runnig the mic through a mixer and using an Aux send to feed the pedal.
