I need an inexpensive, portable recording device with line level input(s) and also microphone input(s), so that I can make simple recordings of guitar riffs combined with drum machine. I would also like to have the option of recording band rehearsal. With cassettes going away, I assume a digital recorder is in order, prehaps a minidisc recorder. I've read some reviews on the Sony MZN510CK, but it seems to be designed more for recording from CD's or MP3's. What is my best bet?

It really doesn't matter that tapes are outdated if you are using them for your personal use. You definately should think about how many imputs you will need to record your band. If you just want to stick a mic in a room then go with a 4 track tape recorder. You can get one for a hundred bucks

I agree. Just make sure you use the fastest recording speed ( 2X )
This will improve the audio quality. My Yamaha 4 track has DBX. Some have Dolby.

Note: 2X will not play well in a regular cassette player.
You'll have to dub to another cassette machine.
Therefore, if you want to play right away in a cassette player, then don't record at 2X

Same goes with DBX or Dolby. It will work fine with the same machine, but if the second player does not have it, then don't use it. Sound will appear muffled.

Tapes? The only reason to get a tape recorder is if your budget is super-tight. Buy a used digital recorder for $300 - you'll be way happier. Make sure it - or whatever you end up with - has the inputs you want, as well as the recording time you need (especially important when considering something like a fostex mr8, which records onto flash cards)
