simple recording setup

I hope this is the correct forum for this.

I am a musician and want to record to my computer. I currently have a blue icicle and Audio Technica Pro 35 mic to connect to my computer (with it's standard sound card). I record brass instruments (Trumpet / Trombone) into audacity currently.

I'm wondering if there would be any advantage to getting an external USB audio interface? one thing I can't do now is monitor what I'm recording due to latency issues (I think that's due to the equipment?)

I'm usually playing an mp3 while recording, then possibly mixing it together once done (i've not tried to apply any effects with the recordings yet).

Yes, yes yes! An external USB audio interface will make all the difference in the world to yur sound quality and ability to monitor and record better.
 
Any suggestions on lesser expensive devices (USB) that would still be an upgrade? I don't do more than one input (at least not now), but being able to monitor what I'm recording would be really nice.

MJ is right. Pretty much any dedicated interface will yield a huge performance increase.

I can personally vouch for the Presonus Firestudio Mobile but unfortunately it's Firewire.

The audiobox might be worth a look. It seems to have the same preamps as the firestudio.

Both have headphone output with volume control, and speaker outputs with separate volume control, so monitoring is covered.
 
What's your budget? The Tascam US-800 can still be purchased for $99 through Amazon.
 
Check out your local Craigslist as well. I picked up a used M Audio Fast Track II for $35.
 
Your soundcard is what will be cuasing the latency, so getting a USB interface with an inbuilt soundcard would definitely help with the latency issues.
The Presonus firepods are pretty good for the price. I think they use Firewire rather than USB though. But a firewire card is pretty cheap for your computer anyway.
