Hi! I'd like to try recording some simple stuff on the computer. I have some software, but I need something to connect the mics or guitar to the computer, and boost the signal. From what I've read, I could get a preamp or a mixer. Would I be able to record just using this? Input to the mixer or preamp, and then straight into the soundcard (an ordinary one, but I only want to do a simple recording)? I haven't seen this actually said anywhere, and I wanted to check before buying something. Thanks for the advice!
Rick.

The simple solution would be an audio interface. Take a look at the following:

Audio interfaces typically have a input for instuments (like an electric guitar or synth), mic preamps, a headphone jack for monitoring, outputs for speakers, AD/DA converters, and a computer connection (USB,Firewire, etc.). There are many varieties, brands, and prices so your choice depends on your budget and some dedicated searching!

Grab a Behringer UB802 mixer. @ XLR's, 2 stereo inputs, 3 band EQ on all channels, phantom power, and $50. Can not go wrong for the price, I have one and love it.
